About the Film
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is a live-action adaptation developed by showrunner Albert Kim, who took over after original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino departed the project in 2020 citing creative differences. Season 1 premiered February 22, 2024, covering Book One: Water, and became one of Netflix's most-watched debut seasons of the year.
Gordon Cormier leads the cast as Aang, with Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko. Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee play Fire Lord Ozai and Uncle Iroh respectively. Season 2, covering Book Two: Earth, premiered October 10, 2024.
Filmed primarily in Vancouver, the production made a deliberate effort to cast actors with heritage matching their characters' cultural inspirations — a key point of criticism of the 2010 film. The show balances expanded lore with new storylines while staying faithful to the core emotional journey of the animated original.
